We’re looking for a super-proactive, technically strong, ambitious, and inspiring Head of Web Development to join our growing integrated agency.

We established Agent back in 2006 – it feels like yesterday and what a ride it’s been. We turned 18 years old this year and the future has never looked brighter for us.

We’re a full-service brand and communications agency. In a nutshell, this means that we deliver a full integrated offering for our clients – from start to finish. Our clients are based all over the UK, across a whole range of different sectors and industries; clean growth, tech for good, connectivity etc. We’re in business for good and they are too. We help them share the great stuff they’re doing, while encouraging and supporting them to grow their businesses and make even bigger impact.

Last count, there are more than 42 of us in our growing team; strategists, designers, animators, programmers, UX designers, digital marketers, canines – the lot. We reckon there’ll be about 50 of us by the end of 2024. We’re a close-knit, passionate bunch that love working together and supporting each other; bringing our individual skills and talents together to create brilliant work that works is what we do best.

CEO of Agent

Are you inspirational, motivated, and experienced? We are looking for a Head of Web Development who can manage and lead our digital team, ensuring our websites are delivered to the highest possible standard, within budget and on time.

With a passion for all things web, including designing, programming, testing, and integrating websites, your goal will be to always exceed our clients’ expectations. You will have a clear understanding of how to take tech and digital language and break it down into something that is easily digestible for clients and partners, regardless of their existing knowledge base.

From taking and shaping briefs, managing team builds, to overseeing all quality control of our web projects, you will have an excellent, well-rounded understanding of the digital and tech world. You will be our first port of call and be able to bring a client vision to life.

With a national client portfolio that spans a wide variety of sectors, you will be working on a range of website design and build projects. We are looking for someone with a keen eye for detail, the ability to multitask, lead authentically and enthusiastically as be part of a people–focussed, value-led company.

The role will involve:

Leading and managing - overseeing the production of design, development, and wider quality assurance for all our team’s websites. You will lead on the supervision, planning, and development of all digital projects ensuring all websites deliver on brief, are accessible, and drive the impact our clients come to us for. You will be our growing team’s go-to person for inspiration, motivation, and performance support.

Web design and development – you will be passionate about coding and web-development. The primary roles of this opportunity will include:

  • Casting the team for web projects
  • Leading website builds, on our preferred CMS, WordPress
  • Developing and maintaining high quality code
  • Integrating with third party services through API’s
  • Ensuring sites lead on accessibility and security
  • Working closely with our creative and marketing teams to realise our client’s vision
  • Ensuring that all websites and systems we create are aligned to the client’s brand guidelines and have been rigorously quality assured throughout the project

Collaborating – you will work closely with not just the digital team, but the wider Agent team to ensure all our websites are delivered on time, on brand and on budget. You will work across all departments within Agent ensuring effective and efficient lines of communication are delivered.

Client engagement – working closely with client partners and the project team, you will support with providing costs and budgets, client engagement and communication, helping to shape website briefs and tech specs, presenting ideas, results and guiding our clients through the digital process.

Resource management – you will work closely with our digital project manager to identify and assign the correct resource within the team, based on capacity and skillset, and brief them as and when projects come in.

Idea generation – as standard, our work needs to continue to stand out from the crowd - it will be part of your job to ensure this happens every time. Bringing new ideas to the table on how we design, create, build, and test our web work.

Research – you will know all the latest trends across the industry so we can ensure we are delivering our websites and systems using the latest technology and innovation. Our work is renowned for being fresh, dynamic, accessible, and impactful and we want to continue this trajectory.

Demonstrating impact – you will feed into the development of regular, accurate and insightful reports for clients including weekly status updates and monthly evaluations. These reports will be delivered in a clear, engaging, and fun way that is easily digestible for our clients.

Representing Agent – you will be asked to attend networking events to strengthen our brand and make new connections for us. You will work with the digital team as well as the wider Agent team to support the delivery of Agent’s key objective of ‘making good work’.

You will need to have:

  • At least 6 years’ experience as a web developer
  • At least 2 years’ experience of managing an integrated web team
  • A strong knowledge of HTML, CSS, Sass, and JavaScript/AJAX
  • A strong knowledge of PHP and MySQL
  • A strong understanding of with headless WordPress setups using Next.js / React.js and similar frameworks
  • Familiarity with CI/CD methodologies and tools
  • Experience using Git version control (Gitlab preferred)
  • Ability to debug and solve complex technical problems
  • Good understanding of web standards, accessibility, and best practices
  • The ability to inform design and ability to translate designs into interactive and mobile-first websites
  • Ability to plan and produce well documented, semantic, and clean code
  • Ability to work as part of our strong team, enhancing our culture
  • Ability to project manage, prioritise, and deliver against deadlines
  • A strong attention to detail and the ability to manage numerous projects simultaneously

It will be beneficial if you have:

  • Some Dev Ops experience (Plesk VPS and AWS)
  • Knowledge of User Experience design processes
  • Experience with Front End frameworks
  • Experience with Front End libraries (Bootstrap, jQuery, Modernizr, etc.)
  • Strong knowledge of website security techniques
  • Knowledge of SEO best practices
  • Examples of work (portfolio, code repos, etc.)
  • Interest in the latest design and technology trends
  • Knowledge and skill in using design software (Adobe Creative Suite preferred)
