For technology enthusiasts like myself, there has been a few things capturing the headlines recently: The release of some new smartphones (Apple and Samsung), Facebook’s internet.org lost its satellite to a rocket explosion and Uber has started using self-driving cars. Now this is all big stuff, but lost in the shadow of it all were a few little things I’d like to bring to your attention about email, the enduring communications medium that we all know (all too well, perhaps…). Email is getting better, and I’d like to share with you exactly how.
With the launch of the iPhone 7 we also saw a major update to iOS. Everybody focused on the new and improved ‘messages’ (especially those little drawing we’re all sending each other). What people didn’t give so much attention to is that there were a couple changes to the mail app as well. This isn’t a huge game-changer for email developers, as the most popular mail app is the most popular for a reason, and it supports nearly everything. The changes that were made are helpful though: the one that I like the most is that you can now add videos to your HTML emails. This is great because everyone loves videos, right!
Is this the start of having a web-like experience in emails? Or are we watching emails as we know them finally die? Whatever the case, I for one would like to see an overhaul for emails so they can look and feel just as great as the website they are related with. What do you think? How would you like emails to feel? Let me know your thoughts (via email, of course).
