Spring Twitch

Spring is upon us people (make a bird noise here). Having endured the lowest cold spell and what feels like the longest winter ever, the garden is giving the first signs that things are finally starting to sprout forth in promised fecund finery.

Rather than me blather on all spring-watch-like stating the obvious delight that seasonal changes instil, I witnessed a marvellous and rare thing this week. Attempting to wake myself with a Lavazza on Saturday morning, I spied a beast of a bird on the tree in the garden. This was no ordinary dirty homespun pigeon, this was a bird of bling. Having rummaged and found the binoculars, logged onto the RSPB website, I identified a Great Spotted Woodpecker. Please do feel free to stifle a yawn as I am sure most people have spotted these avian beauties in the past, but I for one am really excited having never seen the like. My twitch- fest continued and by close of play yesterday I had identified the following species living it up in the garden.

This list does not include Fat Pigeon or Dirty Pigeon who live in my garden all year round and are sub–species of the bird family.
